How does Invisalign Work

First of all, let us understand what Invisalign is and what it does. Invisalign is a method of dental treatment much like braces. But they are more convenient and almost invisible. Invisalign follows your dental practitioner’s suggested method of treatment to help you obtain the most desired results.

How do they do this? Your Edmond dentist/orthodontist will meet with you, do an assessment, and discuss a treatment plan with you. They will take an impression of your teeth. To accomplish this, they will place an impression tray that is filled with a gel into your mouth. Once the gel has set, they will take that mold from the tray and send it to Invisalign. This is where they take the impression of your teeth and make a digital model of your teeth. The Invisalign software will show your teeth as they are right now, then will follow the dental practitioner’s suggested treatment plan and show the movement of the series of “aligners” through to the desired outcome. This gives you an idea of how your teeth may look after the treatment.

The aligners are made from a thermoplastic that is nearly invisible and they are custom made to fit your teeth, so that they fit like a glove. They are to be worn 20 to 22 hours a day, but can be removed for eating, drinking, and cleaning. Then about every 2 weeks you switch to the next aligner in the series of the treatment. As you move through every aligner in the series, they will make slight adjustments and move the teeth towards the desired outcome. You will also visit the doctor during this treatment time to assess the progress.

There are many benefits of this type of treatment. They are different from braces in that they are not made of metal brackets that can cause irritation and sores in the mouth. Since there are no wires to adjust there is less time in the chair at the interim visits. They are nearly invisible so this eases the embarrassment that some people feel with having the metal brackets. With Invisalign you can see the virtual results before you commit to the procedure. There is also the added benefit of removing them for brushing and eating. This is not only convenient but can lessen the chances of infection or decay and bad breath.
